TURMOIL IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
I’ve been hearing and reading about problems inside the Democratic Party for several months, but these tribulations are not what concerns me the greatest; rather it is what I’m hearing from the voting public that heightens my anxieties.
Yes, we are desperate for a single candidate to appear victoriously rising to the challenges of organizing this election. Both candidates have strong qualities and they’ve both made enormous mistakes while on the campaign trail.
While I have comments to both Senators Clinton and Obama, the voting public needs to hear a couple of statements: Our current President Bush has put this nation in such a disastrous mess that I’m concerned anyone accepting the job may require one term to just to undo the harm caused by a greedy zealot. His administration has lied to the public numerous times to garner what they desired politically. We are loosing our sons, daughters, husbands and wives daily in two countries that not one person can authoritatively discern if we absolutely needed to be in either. I don’t even question if our presence has done well for the residences of Afghanistan and Iraq, because I know their liberation has been welcomed by the individual citizens. However, the good our soldiers have done, does nothing to alleviate the veracity of the Presidential administration that has engulfed this country in a war that has no ability of ever winning a victory – only loosing the lives of our valiant soldiers. This war has devastated what was a thriving US economy and perpetuated the destabilization of our economy via a confrontation over fossil fuels that will have the price of gasoline rising for the next few years exponentially. The actions of this President have decimated our Gross National Product while increasing our dependencies on imported commodities. We were once the greatest producing country in the world and now we are the neediest country in the world with President Bush attributing enormously to those changes.
Our current President catered recklessly to Corporate America giving to his petulant children all the riches within the US Treasury. This was payment in full for two terms of one Presidency that will go down as one of this great nation’s worst ever when the history books have reviewed his record. President Bush personally drained the once vibrant reputation of this great nation around the world and has ubiquitously tarnished our name to the point that it lies in the gutter with the remaining waste.
To those voters who are now saying that if Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, they will not vote or they will vote for Senator McCain and to those voters who are now saying that if Senator Barrack Obama wins the Democratic nomination, they will not vote or will vote for Senator McCain; I question your resolve. If you feel as I do that the Presidential Administration currently in office has destroyed this country and thereby must be removed from influencing political efforts in the future; then how the hell can you vote for Mr. McCain. He is a Bush III and will continue every one of the current policies for an additional four years.
This country has been damaged and its citizens have been harmed far too much and a President that will usher in healing as well as changing our downward spiral into a positive change economically and spiritually. Threatening to pull a vote and even worst to vote for a candidate who will not only continue our downward spiral, but add to its velocity and longevity is incredulous. Not voting because your candidate is not amongst those viable for this election will only give weighted means to an already horrendous tenure of policy and practices we good citizens have endured, not to mention spits in the face of all those citizens around the world who fight for the freedom to choose their leaders.
No, our election systems are not perfect and I for one wish to push through with our new President a bill that would change the means of electing the President of the United States and place that right back into the hands of the American citizens as with the popular vote. Currently the popular vote is null and void giving way for the Delegate and Super Delegate votes as the means of choosing our President. This process has failed us greatly in the past two Presidential elections when the popular vote chose one candidate and the delegate/super delegate vote inducted into office a devastating example of a bad President. However, our right to vote for the ruler of the largest country in the world is a privilege that less than fifty percent of humanity can exercise, which I for one will not take for granted.
I understand that you might not agree with everything in any one candidate; however we must remain optimistic that as long as we move away from the politics as usual in Washington DC currently, then there can be hope for our future. If you feel that Clinton would be the better candidate and she is not the Democratic nominee, ask yourself if Obama can do the job better than President Bush? Likewise, if you feel that Obama would be a better aspirant, however he does not receive the Democratic nomination, would Clinton do a better job than President Bush? If your answer to either question is “Yes”, I don’t understand the statement that some would not vote or would cast their vote for McCain in an act of vengeance.
We are not voting for someone who will go away in a week or two if he/she is not liked. We are electing the President of the United States and their administration will direct the policy of this great nation. This election demands action from its citizens and moving this country to a better place then where we’ve been the previous eight years. I personally would vote for my dog, Jake, before I would vote for another Bush in the White House. McCain is exactly that…another Bush that will continue the eradication of the American economic landscape.
In closing a strong message needs to be sent to Senators Obama and Clinton. This vendetta as a campaign needs to come to a close. In the process of closing it down, both candidates needs to stop attacking each other and pull together (if you like the other or not) to build a cohesive party that has the stability and momentum to fight Senator McCain and to win the Presidency. Without making a determination on who I personally wish to win the Democratic nomination, at this time the candidate who is loosing momentum and delegates/super delegates should be the one who works on an exit strategy with a definitive and short time table. That means with the numbers as they are currently reported by the media, Senator Clinton needs to exit gracefully instead of pushing for new ground.

A NATION IN PERIL
Hello Leon,
You bring out many extremely valid and acceptable points in your arguments. Points that people need to hear and need to likewise get angry over. Anger, that needs to turn into action. Actions that hold our politicians to a new set of standards defining a 20th century code of conduct. The American people can force our politicians in to passing new laws changing the face of Washington and asserting strong penalties to those who take advantage of their position and power.
We need to start with revoking the Delegate and Super Delegate voting system and place the power of electing the President of the United States back in to the hands of its citizens. In so doing, we would be forcing Washington in to developing a new system that only calls a delegate voting scheme if the popular vote is too close or within a specified percentage point variance.
We then need to make our elected officials pass new campaign reforms that eliminate PAC Money, Special Interest Lobbying that puts large sums of money in the hands of our politicians. We need to remove from the public official’s appeal of corruption by eliminating the ability for a corporation to sponsor any one public official.
This will not be easy changes to make because politicians and corporations will fight this type of reform with everything they have. It will be taking the power away from the political process and placing it back into the hands of the American people. Corporate America has maintained a stranglehold on the political process for far too long and won’t give it up easily. It will mean the loss of millions of dollars and changing policies that have bent to corporate America for too many years to count and giving up that power will cost the American populace initially in jobs and wages. Eventually corporate America will turn back to the desires to make money and will yield to the will of the people.
However, with courage and a united front the citizens of this great country can take back our nation from corruption and greed and give it back to the people. It won’t be easy, but it is past due for a revolution to shake the tree of liberty.
As for your ascertains that our founding fathers were hypocrites, I can see how and why anyone would draw such a conclusion. I don’t think they were as much hypocrites as great men who were willing to set aside their individual differences to establish what the best foundation for our country was. Yes, some of them lived differently from the guidelines established by our Constitution and Bill of Rights. I think they were far more insightful at seeing that the America they were establishing would grow beyond their knowledge and abilities of understanding and securing a proper foundation that would last beyond their lifetimes. No, they were not all as great as the documents they set forth for you and me, but they knew where their short comings were and left it for us to do what is right.
I believe that we can make this nation great again. We can bring back awareness that all freedoms are capable with proper respect for each other. Respect does not necessitate acceptance, but it does place everyone in the same position with the identical abilities of building their own American Dream.

We the Neglected Children of American Politics
“We the neglected children of American politics, in the sincere hope, that we will someday be embraced by this Union”. I made that up following an inexplicable urge to scan some of this nation’s founding documents yesterday. In doing so, I again read the following from our Declaration of Independence, the document that is the cornerstone of American freedom. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. There is no escaping the beauty, passion and eloquence of Thomas Jefferson’s words. My man Jefferson could run it down now… but apparently he was not talking about everybody. There were, and amazingly still are, Americans who are better described by my far less eloquent opening statement.
The exclusively White representatives that shaped the original thirteen United States were incredible visionaries. I believe that they understood that the fledgling nation they had laid the foundation for would flourish and grow. I also believe that they imagined that Blacks (then primarily but not exclusively a population of slaves) and women, would someday be granted the power of the vote. These rights were not provided for in our original founding documents or laws. It must be pointed out then, that even from the very beginning the influential few, orchestrated governmental inequities counter to their claims. And thus, were born of this wonderful document, the first “neglected children of American politics” to be victimized by the privileged. Women, for social reasons and slaves for economic and political reasons.
I do not believe anyone could have seen or predicted the might and majesty of this country or the socially complex jigsaw puzzle that America has become two hundred thirty two years beyond that historic signing day in 1776. So I am sometimes compelled to consider “ideally” what America was, or is intended to be from the words “We hold these truths to be self-evident”. We? Then there is the Constitution of the United States. As a gentle reminder to those of you who have not considered this topic lately (and in consideration of the www) it (the Constitution) is our nation’s legal guidance document. The rules the Executive and Legislative Branches of our government (President and Congress) are supposed to apply and uphold. The Constitution begins in its preamble, with the words “We the people”. Oh! There’s that word again “we”. Now I ask you, exactly who are the American “we” of today?
I think that in large part Americans understand the rules, but “we” (politicians and power brokers) have become habitual benders and offenders of the rules. I suppose having drawn on the example of the founding fathers. It follows therefore, that there are still “neglected children of American politics”. Massive numbers of our citizens who are being treated unfairly. In fact there are few of us that are not in some way being victimized by political system as orchestrated by “our own” elected representatives. There is not a single problem in American Society that politicians have not created or mismanaged to the detriment of the average American taxpayer and citizen. Not the war in Iraq, corporate graft and greed, not gun control, dependency on foreign oil, the environment, not drugs, not illiteracy, not poverty, not immigration nor or struggling economy You name it! All roads lead to Washington, the Office of the President and the Congress. This nation’s capitol has become a very “dirty sandbox” where the powerful, the privileged and the politicians go to play. A seat of power wrought with lies, distrust and mangled rules. You see for me all that is required are two things. First, that our elected officials follow the rules (apply the law) as clearly spelled out in our Constitution. And secondly and most importantly, serve at the pleasure of and on behalf or their constituents with sincerity and a modicum of decency and integrity. What a concept!
This is a great nation of people, all capable of mistakes. But within the goodness and greatness of this nation today there is a rampant political plague. Greed has a strangle hold on good governance and propriety has been nearly eradicated by reckless pride. I don’t believe there is a ridged blueprint for any American dream but there seems to be a new blueprint for the new American nightmare that far too many are living. I don’t believe that we are all the same in our ideology, dreams or desires. Not even close, and that’s ok. The fact that our citizens are so incredibly diverse adds to the flavor and intrigue of this country. All most people here want is to be welcomed by the same equitable opportunity and treatment standards, and to thrive comfortably within this nation’s massive wealth. Yet somehow “we” can’t even get that right.
The media provides such an excellent vision of the canditates as they speak of America as if they really know what America is, or is intended to be in “glowing definitive terms”. They even speak of Americans as if all of our citizens would (given their abysmal records) be convinced that they have a plan for solving all of our problems. This of course leaves me wondering what they have been doing. Two of the remaining three Presidential candidates have been hanging around Washington for decades individually and more than a lifetime in combined years. So exactly how are they to be excused from their contribution to this nation’s current condition?
I believe the words “Public Service” and Public Office” represent actions and positions intended to benefit our citizens through proud sacrifice. It should never be accepted, intended or understood that such service or office become a vehicle for excessive wealth, while those you supposedly serve languish in any measure of governmental neglect. I also believe that there is a pretty good set of rules laid out for us in our founding documents. I just simply wish the preverbal “we” would follow them. I’m thinking that would be a very good starting point for any measure of positive change in America. Just follow the rules! Then possibly the words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” would become a true reality. Even among the least of our many.
Ironically, the first “neglected children of American politics” (women and Blacks) have their first viable candidates for the Democratic Party nomination and the Presidency of these United States. And should this come to pass, as a representative in the lineage of those once intentionally deprived of their political voice, may the truth of our founding fathers words begin to take shape. I will remain hopeful that of this providence will emerge a leader of judgment, prudence and propriety. That they might contribute their weight of compassionate service upon the scales of citizenship which remain so dreadfully unbalanced by power and privilege. And with this first giant step, that today’s “neglected children of American politics” are energized to speak out with the “voice of the vote” and continue the tide of change throughout Washington that this historic event would seemingly enable and command. You see “we the neglected children of American politics” have to power to change this nation. We must never, “never” forget that! And we must be bound by an unwavering belief in that!
As for me the following questions remain. Why are our political leaders, like the founding fathers, facilitating the continued inequity being suffered by today’s “neglected children of American politics”? And when are we going to do something about it?
As it stands, “we” are getting rich and “the people” are getting screwed!!!
